Few things can surpass us skeletal humans and become famous in the public imagination, much less claim a historical position. Nevertheless, those who succeeded in doing so rose to fame, occasionally even eclipsing the human or non-human persona they were linked with. We come together today to discuss a handful of these recognizable movie props. We come here to discuss watches that were popular on the big screen.
Watches and movies are two distinct but equally beautiful forms of art. Both have unique means of leaving an indelible imprint on people and society at large, affecting the growth of cults and cultures. In addition, both generate a ton of themes and images using their approaches, some of which go on to become legendary.
4 Seiko Watch Appearances in Movies
Table of Contents
1. Predator and Commando Seiko
The Seiko Prospex appears in the person of Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger). The original Arnie ran on a movement H558 while its contemporary adaptations (the Prospex PADI Solar Diver, the Seiko Prospex Solar Diver, and the Seiko Prospex Street Series Diver’s Solar) or, as Seiko nails it, “Reissues” – run on the Calibre H851.
The Arnie gained notoriety as a Seiko that was well-suited to the mood of the era in which the film was set. It was associated with the actor and two of his most well-known parts. The Arnie reissues were released in 2019, with slight changes that increased the attraction of its hulking, T-addled design.
The original dive watch is still in high demand because it was the first to include both an analog and digital LCD screen.
2. Seiko Giugiaro from Aliens
James Cameron’s Alien prominently displayed this watch, which can be found throughout the entire film. This is the only instance in the history of movies and watches where a woman made a traditional men’s watch look badass and made it popular to the point where Seiko had to reprint the model due to public demand.
Seiko and Giorgetto Giugiaro worked to create this watch, arguably the most iconic technology from 1980s science fiction films. Giugiaro is known for his surreal and enigmatic car designs, which informed the sci-fi aesthetic of the Ripley/Spirit. It has easy functionality, but finding it now can be challenging.
3. The Eiffel Tower Seiko
Bond fans are familiar with the quote that Ian Fleming used to describe James Bond as a persona, stating that he could only wear a Rolex as a watch. Roger Moore wore Seiko watches, Daniel Craig proudly sported Omega watches, and Sean Connery wore some of the most recognizable Rolex timepieces. Moore’s Bond believed that timepieces were tools. Thus, they needed to be useful.
Roger Moore wore various Seiko watch models in his various movies, with his final movie dubbed as the “Eiffel Tower” model, dodging the opulent atmosphere of the Rolex. It gained popularity among watch collectors and fans of the James Bond movies due to its simple design, chronograph functionality, and affordability.
4. The Seiko 6105 from Apocalypse Now
The acclaim for Seiko 6105 comes from its practical application in the real world. As a result, renowned film director Francis Ford Coppola used the Seiko 6105 in his film Apocalypse Now. Captain Willard donned the Seiko 6105, and as a result, it became quite popular with seamen and veterans alike.
It is presently difficult to locate an original of this watch. Still, Seiko created a reproduction of it using a contemporary movement (caliber 6R35), and it shares many visual similarities with the Seiko Prospex Turtle Save The Ocean Automatic Diver and the Seiko Prospex Turtle International Edition.
Wrapping Up
Given that Rolex and Casio watches are more well-known than Seiko watches in movies, you are likely unaware of their existence.
It is easy to see why you feel this way: Seiko does not generally receive the credit it merits. It’s time you purchased a Seiko to discover why they are so outstanding.
