Apple iPhone 14 Pro On the wave of innovation

One of Apple’s best-selling phones is traditionally the “basic” iPhone Pro. This year will offer a brand new Dynamic Island, modified photo equipment, but also the long-awaited Always-On. How did the news go? That’s what this review will reveal.

A 30% smaller aperture, four times the number of megapixels for the main sensor, and even Always-On – is this the big revolution presented by the Apple iPhone 14 Pro? We will look at that, as well as other aspects of this smartphone, on the lines below.

Package contents: environmental as always

The contents of the package remain absolutely identical to the previous generation, so inside you will only find a USB-C/Lightning cable, a tool for removing the SIM slot, mandatory manuals, and a single sticker with the manufacturer’s logo. The box must be unpacked by tearing off the paper “fuse”, which also indicates that someone has already opened the package.

Construction: compact except for the weight

I’ll admit that with every review from the iPhone 12 onwards I feel like I can skip the design chapter entirely and nothing happens at all. And this 100% also applies to the iPhone 14 Pro, because apart from a slightly different range of colors and a slightly modified appearance of the photo module, nothing has changed in terms of design.

Apple still stubbornly promotes a combination of luxurious-looking, but also impractically shiny stainless steel bezels combined with frosted glass backs. If you want a completely matte body, all you have to do is put on a case or use a skin. However, at least we can still find a slot for a classic nanoSIM on the side. Customers in the US have not been so lucky and can only rely on eSIM.

Due to the equipment, the phone can be described as a well-equipped compact, which can also be seen in a direct comparison with the Galaxy S22, only the weight of 206 grams puts it in the category of larger smartphones. On the other hand, the higher weight is one of the elements that also completes the impression of a premium product. After all, you expect a phone for 30,000 crowns to weigh something. Traditionally, the haptic response (the best on the market) and durability in the form of Ceramic Shield and IP68 certification with immersion test up to 6 meters are top-notch.

Display: brightness that dazzles and a new “bullet”

Apple already deployed the long-awaited 120Hz LTPO display in the iPhone 13 Pro last year, so there is not much room for innovation in terms of panel technology used this year. It’s still a premium screen of the highest quality, offering maximum brightness (albeit momentarily) up to a whopping 2,000 nits. The 6.1″ OLED display also has beautiful colors and, typically for Apple, very few options for user settings.

This is most noticeable with the new Always-On mode, which definitely deserves attention, although Nokia introduced it on devices with a TFT display back in 2008, and Samsung used it for the first time with the Galaxy S7 in 2016. You can simply turn it on, or leave it off, no other options, nothing extra.

The handling of Always-On mode is also significantly different from what we are used to on Android phones. Basically, the entire screen lights up, even in the area of Dynamic Island, which is so highlighted. If Apple was the first to introduce Always-On and did it before Android, I think this is how today’s Always-On screens would normally look.

Visually, I like the processing, as well as the fact that Always-On automatically intelligently deactivates if you have an Apple Watch paired with your iPhone and move away (with the watch on your wrist) from the phone. That’s a smart feature that I haven’t seen on any Android smartphone paired with a watch. In addition, Always-On only runs at a 1Hz refresh rate and also very clearly displays information about playing music or notifications.

And Apple focused a lot on notifications as such this year and in connection with that introduced the already mentioned Dynamic Island. The pill-shaped piercing, which Android smartphone users are trying to imitate with the help of various applications, caused a real sensation and became one of the most discussed topics on the Internet for several days.

Regardless of the fact that the innovative LG came up with something very similar in the past, may God bless him, this is interesting, but at the moment, in my opinion, a slightly incomplete solution. In short, the Dynamic Island notification control itself seems a bit strange.

Dynamic Island uses a special API that should soon be made available to basically all iOS developers, but of course, there are already a number of applications that can work with this dynamic hole. Typically, of course, these are applications directly from Apple, such as Maps, Dictaphone, Face ID, or Calls, but also several other third-party applications – for example, Spotify or Disney+. The animation itself around the Dynamic Island shot looks really nice, but the controls are ill-conceived.

A short press will open the entire application window and a long hold will enlarge the information area around Dynamic Island. Unfortunately, this seems very counter-intuitive, i.e. the exact opposite of what I (and many others) would imagine, and I would very much like Apple to at least offer users the option to override this setting. The animations themselves then revolve around not only one, but even two applications, when another bubble representing the second application is separated from the main area, which looks very nice, and at least initially you will pay attention to it (see video). In addition, the indicator of the activated microphone, and camera, but also the indicator of the connection of another device to your hotspot has also been newly moved to the Dynamic Island area.

Sound: great stereo

iPhones have long had some of the best speakers you can hear on a smartphone. This is not the case with the iPhone 14 Pro with stereo sound, which simply sounds top-notch. When listening, there is no shortage of pronounced bass, well-presented highs and mids, and also a very high maximum volume. In an emergency, the iPhone 14 Pro can easily replace even a less powerful portable speaker. The quality of the audio recording when shooting videos, taking voice notes, or during classic calls is also at a very high level.
