The Mystery of Clergy Robes:

It is said that the clergy robes were originally used for ceremonial functions, but it is also believed that they were used for protection from fire, cold, and other dangers. This is because bishops and priests have to wear them during daily activities such as mass and processions. The mystery of these robes has been solved recently as scientists have discovered that they are made out of wool, making them extremely lightweight so that bishops can carry them around with ease when needed and when they are wearing them too, they are very comfortable.

Clergy Robes Appearance

The Clergy Dress suit is a staple of the church and is often worn by bishops. A bishop’s robe is made of fine wool or silk fabric that has been cut into a long coat and sleeves. The sleeves are often decorated with embroidery, and the front part of the coat has a small cape attached to it. The cape may be made with fabric like velvet, velvet lace, satin, or even silk.

The clergy robe is available in different colors: black, white, and blue for men and white for women. A bishop’s robe can also be made from different materials like velvet, satin, or silk but usually, only black has been used in most cases because it is easier to sew on than other fabrics.  The key element of a Clergy’s robe is its sleeves. Even though the clergy dress suit is not worn for ceremonial occasions, it still has the same function of covering up the shoulders. From the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, when bishops wore their robes with full sleeves, they could be easily seen from several angles because their arms reached almost to their elbows. The robes are made of special material. The sleeves of the clerics’ robes are made of linen twisted to form a network and then stitched at the bottom.

The screen above the elbow has decorative threading to make the sleeve frayed along its edges and worn out. This happened mostly because bodies were larger in those times, and the pressure from the fabric caused a larger fraying. The screen could be made of any material, but it is usually wool. Boys also wore this kind of cloak. In those times, people were not as conscious about their body shape as nowadays. On top of it, since both sexes had their dresses in those days, clothing of all kinds (shoes, gloves, hats) was also worn by both genders.
