Harry Kane is set to lead Tottenham Hotspur out against Arsenal in the English Premier League on Saturday. Tottenham Hotspur have made a solid start to the season by winning their first three league games, and they are three points behind Manchester United. If they win, it would give them a boost in their quest for a top-four finish.
Kane scored his 250th goal for the club in Saturday’s win over Wolves. His 185th in all competitions is also a Premier League record. He is one of only four players to have scored in all competitions for a single club.
While Kane has been a force for Tottenham, he has never lifted a major trophy. The club’s record-breaking striker was also unable to lead England to glory in Euro 2020. It was a drab first half, with Son Heung-min failing to hit the target from a close-range shot.
After a slow start, Spurs put pressure on the Wolves defence in the second half. Tanguy Ndombele and David McGoldrick helped put Spurs in front. But the hosts were punished when Divock Origi grabbed a goal.
Spurs’ poor start to the season
Spurs are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after an eye-catching Harry Kane goal saw them progress past Portsmouth. The striker’s goal was his fourth in four games for the club. It puts him one short of the record set by Jimmy Greaves.
After a goalless first half, Spurs woke up and began to win the ball in the middle of the park. However, they failed to take advantage of that until the end.
Kane got involved in the match more and more as the game went on. Initially, he tried to play the ball back to Son Heung-min, but the former Tottenham forward was blocked from the ball by Owen Dale.
In the early stages, Pompey had the better of the possession. They were using long throw-ins to penetrate the Spurs defence. But the Spurs defence was strong enough to keep them at bay.
After the first half, the Pompey defenders were still holding up well. However, the Spurs started to look more adventurous. Eventually, they broke away from the defensive unit.
Chelsea’s four wins in a row against Tottenham
The first leg of their four-game winning streak against Tottenham Hotspur was a good one. Not only was Chelsea a notch better over the full 90 minutes, but they had a more impressive expected goals tally.
Tottenham, though, had a much better start. The game was the first time that Spurs had scored more than a single goal in the opening 15 minutes of a Premier League game. They were also a notch better in terms of shots.
Despite a strong defensive performance, the Tottenham Hotspur’s forward line was not quite up to the challenge. That is not to say that the home side were not capable of scoring. It was a case of a lack of counter-attacks.
Neither side was able to make the most of their chances in the first half. Harry Kane was unable to find the net from a wide angle. Likewise, Eden Hazard was unable to score from a long range shot.
Chelsea had an excellent chance to take the lead in the second minute. Jorginho made a mistake in the penalty area, giving away the ball. He had plenty of time to settle before hammering an effort towards goal. But Hugo Lloris did well to stop the low shot.
Tottenham’s four changes to the starting line-up
Harry Kane’s stunning goal against League One side Portsmouth in the FA Cup third round is enough to see Tottenham through to the fourth round. Spurs have now won five matches in a row and now sit second in the table on 33 points from 18 matches.
The goal came after Jordan Pickford brought down the Tottenham forward in the 60th minute. Kane sent a curled shot past Pickford from outside the area. It was his 400th appearance for the club.
Portsmouth made a valiant display in front of 9,000 fans. Pompey were unable to break through the Spurs defence in the second half.
A couple of early substitutions saw Ben Davies and Alfie Devine come on. The Spurs skipper is set to play again. In midfield is Pape Matar Sarr, who has made a full debut.
Spurs have started well in the second half. Son Heung-min has played well and won a penalty after being fouled. But Spurs have failed to find an opening.
