How Do I Select The Right Housing Option Under NDIS?

Right Housing Option

What Is NDIS?

NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme. It is a disability program started by the Australian government to help people living with any significant or permanent impairment. It aims to help the participants lead independent lives and provides a wide range of support for it. NDIS also provides various housing options to the participants so they can have the perfect living situation for their well-being. Following are the housing options that NDIS offers its participants and how you can know which option is the most suitable for you.

Individualised Living Options (ILO)

The first housing option under NDIS is ILO, and it is offered to participants with low to medium levels of needs. With this support, NDIS allows you to have a support worker come to your home and support you in your individual needs, including cooking, cleaning, toileting, etc. This is based on the level of support one needs and how much your family and friends are able to provide for you. You can get up to seven hours of support with this option.

Supported Independent Living (SIL)

Also known as supported accommodation, SIL is the housing option for people with slightly higher needs levels than ILO offers. This option allows you to stay at a shared place with other NDIS participants so you can have a chance to socialise, and a support worker can stay with you overnight to keep a check on you. Another benefit of having this housing option is that you can hire one support worker for all the housemates, and you will be able to save your funds as everyone will pay for the support equally.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)

This housing option is only available for people with more complex needs. It allows you to live in a tailor-made house that is designed around you. The accommodation in this support is specifically made to fit your needs so you can have all the support.

Short And Medium-Term Accommodation

Short-term accommodation is provided for the participants when they need a getaway from their primary house. With this support, they can live in the place of their choice for up to 14 days. However, if the participant needs the accommodation for any longer than 14 days, they will have to take medium-term accommodation, which allows them to stay at a place for up to 90 days.

Home Modification

This option allows the participants to make changes in their current house depending on their needs. You can redesign your house and make changes that seem fit for your mobility. This support ensures that you can stay at your house comfortably while moving around freely and performing your everyday activities.

Choosing The Right Option

It can be daunting for new participants to choose the right housing option, but NDIS doesn’t provide funds for anything unrelated to your needs. Hence, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) assesses your condition before funding the housing in your NDIS plan. They will allow the option that is best fit for you, and then you can start looking for the place with the help of your service provider.
