How To Adapt A Murphy Bed Cabinet For An Air Mattress

A Murphy bed, also known as a wall bed, is an elegant solution to your space issues. The bed folds up against the wall and can be easily hidden when not in use. But what happens when you want to use it for guests? If you have access to a Murphy bed cabinet and air mattress, you can make your own customized solution that’s easy to put together and takes up almost no floor space when not in use! We’ll show you how!

Murphy Bed Cabinet For An Air Mattress

A Murphy Bed is something many people want in their home and some people may even have it, but do you know how it works? A Murphy Bed is usually positioned in the bedroom of your home, on top of the dresser, or someplace where you don’t need much room. When not being used, the bed folds up into itself, flat against the wall. This creates storage space when it’s not needed.

A Murphy Bed Cabinet will also be able to function similarly in your garage or extra bedroom and be put away easily when not in use with an air mattress built-in.

Can You Put An Air Mattress On A Murphy Bed?

A Murphy bed is like a cabinet with double doors. It appears to be closed, but when you open it up it turns into your room. It’s great because it offers more space and can be easily hidden away. A Murphy bed is different from a bunk-bed, because while bunks are horizontal, Murphy beds are vertical sometimes nearly 5 feet high. If you want the benefits of having your own place (versus staying in someone else’s), this type of bed could help you make that happen.

As much as I love Murphy beds, there are some drawbacks: One of them is how difficult they can be to set up if you don’t know what you’re doing–it’s easy to break things if you’re not careful or strong enough.

How Is Mattress Attached To Murphy Bed?

A Murphy bed is a good option if you want more versatility. The mattresses that come with the bed are typically smaller than twin size, but they still can be raised and lowered into place. Plus, the best part about Murphy beds is that they can be folded down and stored out of sight when not in use.

A popular option for people looking to accommodate an air mattress is to replace the original collapsible frame inside of the Murphy bed with one made from PVC pipe or wood slats. You may also attach adhesive Velcro straps on either side of the frame where the small rollers would normally reside and Velcro them securely to attach your foam or memory foam top onto it.

Can A Murphy Bed Have An Adjustable Base?

Does it have a slatted base or is it solid? Depending on the answer, you will have one of two options. If your Murphy bed has a slatted base, then the first thing you will need to do is find out if the slats are spaced apart far enough that you can lay an air mattress in between them. Measure across one side of the Murphy bed and add 6 inches (to allow room on either side of the frame).

That will be how wide your slats should be. Adjusting the widths too far in either direction can affect how sturdy it is. If your Murphy beds doesn’t have slats or if they are spaced too close together, then there are at least two options.

Can You Put A Murphy Bed In A Closet?

One great way to utilize more space in your home is with a Murphy bed. While they are typically seen as the larger, platform style beds you can push against the wall and make more space, there are also versions of this idea that are made for smaller spaces such as inside of a closet or under your stairs. One way to make use of the space inside your murphy bed is with an air mattress that could be stored away when not in use. Here’s how you can go about adapting your Murphy cabinet into storage for a full-sized air mattress

Conclusion

An air mattress is not only cheaper than buying a new Murphy Bed, but it also takes up less space. You’ll need the following items:

  • A large closet with doors or one that’s tucked away in your basement
  • An air mattress and pump (ideally of the same brand)
  • Scissors or shears
