Heaven on earth, Kashmir deserves the title. The landscape has mountains covered in snow, green meadows, fast-flowing rivers, and forests. Kashmir has many famous Himalayan trails which are quite popular among them. Tarsar Marsar is one of them. 

Tarsar Marsar Journey (The Twin Sisters)

The Tarsar Marsar trek starts in the valley of Aru. The scene of Pine trees and the walk-in hill is just a scene to the eyes. Tarsar lake is an almond shape situated between Sindh and Lidder Kilometres. The Tarsar lake is at an altitude of 12,000 feet and the reflection observed on a nice sunny day are awesome. The turquoise-blue colour of the lake makes it all more beautiful. It is a part of the twin lake trek of the Tarsar Marsar lake, Royal Basmati lake, and Kolahoi Mount combination. This is an ideal trek for beginners. If the weather supports you then the scenery all along the way is spectacular. These lakes are situated 3 kilometres and 5kilometrese away from the village of Nagberan. The location of Tarsar Marsar is 20 kilos metres to the east of Kola hoi mountain in the Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir. The exotic Tarsar Marsar lake location and eye catchy landscape of the area are the two things that made people crazy about the trek. 

The water is so crystal clear that the sky is visible in itAdd the Sundarsar lake which is in midway and Sonmasti waterfall a little ahead of Marsar. The twin sisters flow in opposite orientations, the Tarsar merge with the Lidder River and Marsar joins to  Aru.

Marsar is known by another name the Death lake. Legend believes that nob had returned alive whenever stayed overnight on the banks of lake Marsar. This lake has a very peaceful serene atmosphere different from the Tarsar. Nevertheless, Marsar is still very an alpine lake hidden deep amidst tall mountains all around.

The difficulty level of the trek 

Tarsar Marsar level is easy to moderate. Most of the portion of the trail has rough patches and boulder field zones that make the trek a little tricky for beginners. Towards Marsar may be the biggest hurdle for first-timers. Lastly, hurdles are a  lot to experience.

Roadmap to Tarsar Marsar 

The journey starts at Srinagar. From Srinagar to Aru via Pahalgam. The total distance is 112 kilometres covered by road within 3 to 4 hours. The upstream of Lidder river of around 10 kilometres. After some local Gujjar passes the Lidder at valley bird eye view will enchant once journey. A wooden bridge will take you to the other side of the river after an hour the Homwas a small Dell. After Homwas the journey gets easy. From Shekwas to Tarsar lake, steep climbers get a glimpse of the beautiful almond-shaped Tarsar lake. The Trek start from Tarsar valley and heads toward Shekwas valley. Marsar lake can only be seen when you climb to the ridge. Towards the end of the trip heads back to Homwas through the Jagmargi valley trekking 13 kilometres in 6 hours. 

Best time to visit 

The best time to trek in Tarsar Marsar is from April to September. In from trail remains clear and greener. In the monsoon, there is little rainfall in the Kashmir valley with views friendly to tourists. From August, the weather gets colder. During the night the temperature reaches up to -3 degrees.

How to reach the Base camp 

From Srinagar you can get all kind of routes as the place is connected with, the rest of the country by train and Airways train the nearest railway station is Jammu. From Jammu take a light to Srinagar which is merely  1 hour. Taxi and cabs again options but take long hours of around 8 to 9 hours to reach Srinagar. From Srinagar to Aru cab and taxi are good options or to be best on your transport is a good option. As there are no bus services to Aru. 

Is this trek safe 

The track is safe because the remote of Kashmir is away from advancement. If you suddenly encounter a curfew don’t panic take some measures to stay in tourist areas and never try to explore unknown areas.
