How to Set Up SOS Features on Android and iOS

SOS Features

Taking care of your family’s safety has become much easier in recent years. Smartphone applications are an integral part of our lives and there are plenty of them that offer personal safety services. Moreover, the trend for safety has made Google and Apple add SOS calls and messages to their mobile OS. Read on to learn how SOS alerts work and how to set them up on your Android and iOS devices.

What is the Emergency SOS button? How Does It Work?

Even in the modern world you and your family are vulnerable to many risks. Seniors often suffer from aging. College students could become the victims of stalking and only God knows where kids could play outside. Personal safety systems aim at minimizing the risks while leaving space for privacy.

There are many safety devices starting from medical alerts and ending with home security systems. Most of these use an emergency SOS signal that tracks the user’s location and sends the notification to the list of emergency contacts.

This works relatively simply. Let’s say you have an elderly mother with dementia. Mental issues often make the house a dangerous place. Normally, if your mother has fallen, she would need to cry for help or deal with the injury on her own. With the emergency SOS feature, she can immediately call the list of preset contacts or send them a notification with her latest location.

How to Set up Emergency SOS Features on Android

Built-in emergency SOS features differ depending on the operating system you use. For instance, we recommend having the latest Android 12 version to get all of the functions working on Android. Here’s how you can use your phone to send an alarm to a phone number.

Setting up Google Emergency

Google has a specific application called Google Emergency, which is installed by default on any Android device. To use it you will need to:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Safety & Emergency.
  3. Toggle Emergency SOS.
  4. Specify settings.
  5. Provide the necessary permissions.
  6. Specify emergency SOS actions (e.g., press the power button 5 or more times quickly to initiate an SOS signal)

Putting a Lock Screen Message

You can also put an emergency message on a lock screen. This way, a person who may find you unconscious will know how to help.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Tap Advanced.
  4. Tap Lock screen display.
  5. Tap Lock screen message.
  6. Enter the information that will help in an emergency
  7. Save

How to Set up Emergency SOS Features on iOS

iOS devices have similar personal safety and SOS alert features.

Сalling the Local Emergency Number

The Emergency SOS button works similarly on iOS devices, but, depending on your iOS device version, the settings may differ.

On iPhone 8 and later:

  1. Hold the side button and one of the volume buttons to see the Emergency SOS slider.
  2. Drag it to call emergency services.
  3. You can keep holding the side button and one of the volume buttons instead of dragging the slider to initiate a countdown and sound an SOS alert.
  4. You can hold the button till the end of the countdown to automatically dial emergency services.

On iPhone 7 and earlier:

  1. Press the top or side button five times to see the Emergency SOS slider.
  2. Drag the slider to call emergency services.

Sending the Location to Emergency Contacts Automatically

You can make your iPhone 8 or later send the information automatically:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Emergency SOS.
  3. Turn Call with Hold/Call with five presses on.

After the call ends, your device will send an SOS signal to the phone numbers on your emergency contacts with a text message containing your current location.

How AllsWell Alert Can Help

AllsWell Alert is an application that uses an inactivity monitoring feature. That means it can track the user’s personal safety with specific inactivity timers. What makes it different from Android and iOS apps is that AllsWell Alert will send the SOS alarm without direct input. The setup is pretty simple as well.
