Do you want to get admission to one of the top central universities in India? If yes, then taking the CUET test is important for you. Whether you are an art, commerce, or science undergraduate, you can appear for the test. In this article, you will get to whether the exam is mandatory for all universities or not, along with other important details.

Importance of CUET Exam

Many undergraduate students aspire to be a part of the central universities. However, a very less number of students actually make it. It is mainly due to the high cut-off marks set by the reputed central universities. It limits the students from getting equal opportunities to get admission into the top universities. That is exactly why the CUET or Common University Entrance Test has been introduced. On the basis of the results of CUET, students will get admission into the central universities in India.

The core aim of the entrance exam is to provide the students in India with equal opportunities, irrespective of their class 12 marks. It provides the students who were not able to score well in the class 12 exam with an opportunity to apply to different central universities. All the students from different parts of the country will be able to apply to the recognized central universities after qualifying the exam. It fulfills the dreams of the students to be a part of the top universities in India. Moreover, the entrance exam is also expected to reduce the financial burden on the students and their parents.

Is CUET Exam Compulsory?

According to the notice issued by the University Grants Commission in March 2022, CUET is compulsory for all UGC-funded central universities in India. It is mandatory for the universities to conduct the admission process on the basis of CUET exam results. So, students who want to get admission into any of the 45 central universities will have to give the entrance exam.

However, that doesn’t mean that there will be no value of the class 12 exam. As per the Ministry of Education, 50 percent weightage will be given to the board examination results of class 12. The remaining 50 percent exam will be given to the CUET result.

The CUET exam will, however, not affect the policies of central universities relating to admission. For instance, if any central university has certain reservations for internal or local students, there will be no changes to that. The ordinances and reservation policies will remain unchanged.

Moreover, for the skill-based courses such as painting, music, theatre, and sculpture, the universities can conduct practical exams in addition to CUET. For these courses, the central universities can assign specific weightage to interviews and practical exams. An important point to note is that there won’t be any centralized counseling. If required, the universities can conduct counseling of their own.

The international students are exempted from appearing for the CUET exam. They will get admission into the central universities according to the already existing practices of the university.

A Quick Glance at CUET Exam 2022

The National Testing Agency or NTA will administer the CUET exam. As per the notification of UGC, the private and public institutions may accept CUET. The exam will be conducted in 13 different languages. It includes English, Hindi, Odia, Kannada, Telugu, Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Malayalam, Bengali, Assamese, Tamil, and Marathi, among others. So, the students have the flexibility to choose the language as per their convenience.

When it comes to the structure of the CUET, the examination will take place in two phases. In the first phase, there will be a language exam. In addition to that, the students will also have to appear for two domain-specific exams and a general test. The second phase of the CUET exam will consist of four domain-specific subjects. In order to provide greater flexibility, the students will have multiple choices for each of the sections. The students have the freedom to choose their domain subjects from the 27 available subjects. The available subjects include biology, geography, economics, business studies, accountancy, and chemistry, among others. All the questions in the exam will be based on the NCERT syllabus of class 12.
