Anirudh Ravichander, born in Chennai on October 16th, 1990, is a young 32 years old Indian singer and music composer who rose to prominence in 2011 with his first composition, “Why This Kolaveri Di!” The song was written and sung by Dhanush and was an instant hit when it was released on YouTube. It went so excessively viral that YouTube soon awarded this video with “Trending” and “Recently Most Popular” titles. With an astounding 347 million views on YouTube after over a decade, this song is considered one of the most popular Indian music videos even today.

He was born into a family of well-recognized artists and film personalities. His father, Ravi Raghavendra, is an actor in the Tamil film industry and worked in several Tamil films and television shows. His mother, Lakshmi Ravichander, is a classical dancer. Anirudh’s parents may not be very known faces outside Tamil Nadu despite their filmy career, but his uncle, the legendary actor and star Rajanikath, needs no introduction.

After his first success with “Why This Kolaveri Di!” in 2011, Anirudh did many notable works, such as singing and composing “Kanave Kanave,” a single track for Bejoy Nambiar directed film David in 2013. The song also received praise from critics, with one mentioning it as the top pick of the album.

His next work as a music composer was for the film “Ethir Neechal” in the same year, which critics and listeners also accepted with enthusiastic reviews. In this film, Anirudh worked with popular Indian rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh, introducing him to a Tamil movie for the first time.

The composer continued his success story with his music for “Vanakkam Chennai,” a Tamil comedy film released in July 2013, where he also featured as a singer in six of the total seven tracks of the album. It reached the top album threshold in iTunes India soon after its music launch. Just before its release, Anirudh himself described this album as the best work in his career in an interview. As a music composer, he did many revolutionary “first-time” things in this film, such as introducing Bollywood singer Vishal Dadlani, Indian-origin British popstar Arjun, and popular female rapper Hard Kaur, to name a few.

Anirudh’s other outstanding works include soundtracks for blockbuster films like Vijay starrer “Kaththi” (2014), Dhanush starrer Maari (2015), “Ajith Kumar starrer “Vedalam” (2015), Rajanikanth starrer “Petta” (2019), Vijay starrer “Master” (2021), and many more.
