Learn How To Use Stop Navigation on Google Maps App


For easy, step-by-step navigation, use the Google Maps app. Maps uses real-time traffic information to show you the best route to your destination.

Voice navigation gives you traffic alerts, telling you where to turn, which lane to take and if there’s a better route.

Important : Navigation and lane information is not available in all countries, regions, or languages. Navigation is not designed for emergency or oversized vehicles.

Requirements for using navigation

On your phone or tablet:

  • Activate your GPS.
  • Allow Google Maps to use your current location and speakers.

Start or stop navigation

  1. Open the Google Maps app mapson your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Search for a location or tap it on the map.
  3. At the bottom left, tap Directions . If you press and hold the button, navigation starts. You can then skip steps 4 to 6. Find out how to add more destinations.
  4. Select your mode of transportation .
  5. If other routes are available, they are displayed in gray on the map. To follow an alternate route, tap the gray line.
  6. To start browsing, press Start Departure. If you see “Searching for GPS signal”, your phone is trying to get a GPS signal. You may be located in a place where there is no GPS signal, in a tunnel or in a parking lot, for example.
  7. To stop or cancel browsing, tap Close Closeat the bottom left by clicking on “Google navigation exit

Tips:

  • In just seconds, you can view traffic information, public transport options and nearby places of interest. Learn more about nearby addresses and trip planning
  • To view the map from your vantage point, tap the compass.

Show other options while browsing

To view other available options while browsing, navigate to the information card at the bottom of the screen, then swipe it up. To hide the menu, swipe down on the information card.

  • Share my progress : Share your location in real time until you arrive. Learn more about real-time location sharing
  • Find along the route : Find a place along your route, such as a restaurant or gas station. Find out how to find nearby addresses and discover the region.
  • Route : Get a list of route stops.
  • Traffic on the map (in car mode only): identify delays on the route, due to accidents or construction, for example.
  • Satellite Images : Access a more detailed map by viewing satellite images.
  • Settings Settings: Change your settings (for example, switch from miles to kilometers or avoid toll roads).

Use voice navigation

When navigating to a location, you can use voice navigation. Learn how to troubleshoot voice navigation issues.

Adjust volume

  1. Open the Google Maps app mapson your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial  your account icon then Settings  Settings then Navigation settings  then Voice guidance volume .
  3. Select Louder , Normal , or Softer .

Mute, unmute, or hear alerts

  1. Open the Google Maps app mapson your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Start browsing.
  3. At the top right, tap Sound sound activated. Then choose from the following options:
    • Mute sound : Tap Mute Muted sound.
    • Hear alerts : Tap Alerts Alerts. You’ll hear alerts about traffic, construction, and accidents, for example. You will not hear turn-by-turn navigation.
    • Unmute : Tap Sound sound activated.

Mute voice navigation during phone calls

If you receive a call while browsing, you can answer it. However, you will still hear the voice prompts unless you turn them off.

  1. Open the Google Maps app mapson your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial your account icon then Settings Navigation settings . Settings then
  3. Activate or deactivate the “Voice guidance during calls” option.

You may be able to change the voice in your phone or tablet’s text-to-speech settings.

  1. Open your phone or tablet’s settings app.
  2. Tap Language & input .
  3. Tap Text-to -speech .
  4. Under ‘Preferred engine’, select another text-to-speech option.
  5. Voice navigation uses the voice you select. Note that your new setting also applies to other apps.

Change the language

  1. Open the Google Maps app mapson your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial your account icon then Settings Settings then Navigation settings .
  3. Under ‘Sound and voice’, tap Voice selection .
  4. Select a language.
