While many lawn mowers are now powered by gas or electricity, some of us still have the privilege of using our trusty old push mower to cut the grass each summer. While it can be tempting to try and squeeze in that extra few minutes of work each day before heading off to work, there are important outdoor equipment safety tips every lawn mower should know about before going out on the lawn for the first time each season. Here’s why these outdoor equipment safety tips matter, and how you can put them into practice before you start mowing the lawn this spring!

Equipment Safety Tips

  • You will want to make sure that you always wear goggles while operating any of the lawn equipment.
  • If you do not have eyeglasses, make sure that you wear a pair of safety glasses in order to protect your eyes.
  • Wear long pants and sturdy shoes at all times while working on the yard since there are always some blades and dirt involved with this type of work!

Protective Gear

Always wear protective gear when using any type of equipment. This can include gloves, eye protection, long sleeves, jeans or other sturdy clothing, and a hard hat. In addition to these pieces of gear, you should also always have a first-aid kit on hand. Be sure that it includes bandages and tape for sprains and strains as well as gauze pads and ointment for cuts or bruises.

Know Your Space

  • Make sure you are in a well-lit area, preferably with someone else around.
  • Keep your machine on the ground and away from any bodies of water or other hazards
  • Always make sure there is enough room for the blades to turn
  • If you are cutting an area near a tree branch, be sure that branch is not close enough to get hit by the blade

Keep Safe from Slips and fall

One of the most common injuries from using a lawnmower is a slip and fall. Slips and falls happen for many reasons, but can often be avoided by taking simple precautions such as wearing closed-toe shoes with a grip, making sure that your footing is stable before you start mowing, or using an anti-slip mat under the lawnmower.

Get Help from Other People

As you might have guessed, one of the best ways to be safe with any piece of outdoor equipment is to make sure that you are wearing the proper safety gear. The most important pieces of safety gear are a helmet, eye protection and heavy-duty gloves. A lot of people will also wear protective boots or shoes but these can sometimes get in the way when working with certain types of equipment.

Watch Out For Moving Parts

Lawn mowers are some of the most dangerous machines found in a garden. They have many moving parts that can cause injuries if they are not handled with care. For example, the blades are always spinning and any contact with them could cause a cut or other type of injury. While it is tempting to get close to the blade while it is cutting, this should be avoided at all costs because it could lead to serious injuries.

Be Prepared for Emergencies

In case of an emergency, it’s important to have the right tools on hand. A first-aid kit is always a good idea, and if you’re working with electric equipment make sure you have a fire extinguisher handy. A charged cell phone can be helpful if you need help or need someone else to know what’s going on.

Don’t Get Stuck!

Did you know that almost one in three Americans was injured by a lawn mower? The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that there are about 169,000 injuries from lawn mowers each year. If you want to avoid being one of the statistics, take a look at these safety tips.
