The Curvy Girl’s Guide to Shopping in China

Before and after shot of a woman's weight loss progression

As an American woman who has lived in China for the last few years, I’ve been through my fair share of trials and tribulations when it comes to shopping here. While I find the fashion options abundant, and the quality of some clothes quite good, the sizes available are often hard to find in my normal size (14/16 U.S.), and when I do find something that fits well it’s often several times more expensive than if I were shopping back home. Read on to see what worked best for me when I needed to buy clothes in China!

Picking Clothes

FondMart is a wholesale plus size clothing vendor that offers a variety of clothing and accessories. The assortment ranges from trendy fashion items, lingerie, and accessories. FondMart has showrooms throughout the city and is accessible by taking the metro or bus. The company also ships internationally.

Navigating the Retail Experience

China is the world’s largest market for plus size women, but that doesn’t mean finding clothing and shoes is easy. Whether you’re a curvy girl traveling to China or living there, navigating the retail experience can be tricky. Fortunately, there are wholesale plus size clothing vendors who offer international shipping and online shopping as well as brick-and-mortar stores with international brands.

Packing Light

China has great wholesale plus size clothing vendors, but you have to do a little bit of research before you go. Plus size clothes are not as big a part of the fashion industry there as they are here, so it can be difficult if you don’t know what you’re looking for. That being said, there is a lot of great quality clothing available if you know where to look. My personal favorite place to shop is Taobao, which I find similar to eBay. The drawback is that shipping will take about one month and the only way to return something is if it doesn’t fit or isn’t what you wanted. So be sure you buy from someone who has high feedback!

Finding Clothes That Fit

China has several different sizing scales, which makes it difficult for plus size shoppers. It’s best to go into a store and try the clothes on before buying them, so you can make sure they’ll fit. If you’re not sure what size is best for you, ask the employees at the store. And don’t forget that online shopping is also an option. Chinese websites such as Taobao have many great clothing options for plus size women, though you’ll want to be careful with any items from there that require alterations (like shoulder straps). In some cases, stores may carry sizes outside of their own scale – like 14-16 or 18-20 – so if you’re local store doesn’t have your desired sizes, take a look elsewhere!
