Jessie Nelson is an American playwright and writer who wrote the book Waitress the Musical, a stage production based on the 2007 film. She studied briefly at the University of California Santa Cruz but dropped out to join the experimental acting group, Mabou Mines. She went on to star in a Shakespeare in the Park production of The Tempest and has written children’s books Labracadabra and Waitress in the Park. Nelson is the Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute’s Writers Lab and has written many other works for children.
