Jessie Nelson is an American playwright and writer who wrote the book Waitress the Musical, a stage production based on the 2007 film. Nelson is the Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute’s Writers Lab and has written many other works for children.

While working on the movie, Jessie became aware of Adrienne’s husband. Jessie became a part of the Waitress creative team when she was asked to write a musical based on the film’s screenplay.
