Tretinoin is available in the form of cream, lotion, and gel. It belongs to the class of medications called Retinoic Acid or Retinoids. It is a synthetic version of Vitamin A and is available in both generic forms and under many brand names. Tretinoin is prescribed to control the symptoms of acne and sun damage. It is also prescribed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots. It is important to remember that Tretinoin does not cure acne and its underlying causes. It merely helps relieve the symptoms by clarifying the pores and improving appearance.

How does Tretinoin work?

Tretinoin helps clarify the appearance of acne and fine lines by affecting the speed of cell growth. Surprisingly, tretinoin gel works by causing a slight irritation of the skin. This does not cause discomfort but speeds up the regeneration of the epithelial cells of the skin. By boosting the cell’s life cycle, it prompts damaged cells to be replaced by newer, healthier cells, promoting skin healing. It also boosts the production of elastin and collagen, both proteins that play an important role in maintaining firm, clear skin.

Application

Read the instruction for the Tretinoin application carefully before use.

Tretinoin and moisturizer

  • Tretinoin gives the best results when applied once a day, preferably before bedtime
  • Clean your face with a gentle face wash and pat dry
  • Wait at least 20 minutes before you apply the Tretinoin cream, lotion, or gel
  • Apply a thin film over the affected area and allow it to be absorbed

One of the side effects of Tretinoin application is a slight dryness of the skin. One of the best ways to keep the skin soft, supple, and hydrated during Tretinoin use is to combine it with a moisturizer.

Dermatologists highly recommend the use of a moisturizer with Tretinoin.

Keep the following points in mind while picking a moisturizer to use during your treatment with Tretinoin –

  • Avoid moisturizers with alcohol content. Alcohol increases the dryness of the skin and causes irritation. It is best to avoid these when using Tretinoin.
  • Avoid moisturizers with benzoyl peroxide. This chemical causes a great deal of dryness and flakiness of the skin. They counteract the efficacy of Tretinoin.
  • Avoid moisturizers with Salicylic Acid. Salicylic Acid is a common ingredient in many face products, but when used with Tretinoin, it causes dryness, redness, and irritation.
  • Avoid moisturizers with chemical fragrances. Chemical fragrances irritate and worsen acne.

Side-effects and warnings

A moderate amount of dryness and peeling is to be expected with the use of Tretinoin. Contact your doctor if you experience extreme discomfort, irritation, redness, swelling, or pigmentation. Avoid using skin products with strong astringents, spices, or lime with Tretinoin.

Tretinoin products take about 4-6 weeks to provide the most beneficial results. Follow your doctor’s recommendations in diet and lifestyle to experience the best results.
