Joe Rogan Early Life

Joseph James Rogan, also known as Joe Rogan, was born on August 11, 1967, in Newark, New Jersey, US. When Rogan was 5 years old, his parents went through a divorce, and his contact with his father died off by the time he reached the age of 8. When asked about his relationship with his father, Rogan said: “All I remember of my dad are these brief, violent flashes of domestic violence… But I don’t want to complain about my childhood. Nothing bad ever really happened to me… I don’t hate the guy.”

At the age of 7, Rogan moved along with his family to San Francisco and lived there till he was 11 years old. After that, they moved to Gainesville, Florida, and later went on to later settle in Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts. Here, Rogan studied at Newton South High School, receiving his graduation in 1985.

Rogan harbored a growing interest in the martial arts when he was young and at age 14, he began learning karate, which was then followed by taking up Taekwondo. Rogan won the US Open Championship taekwondo tournament as a lightweight at the age of 19 and was a Massachusetts full-contact state champion for four consecutive years. He went on to become a Taekwondo instructor. Apart from this, Rogan also practiced amateur kickboxing, however, due to suffering from occasional headaches, he retired from the competition by the age of 21.

Joe Rogan Career

Joe Rogan did not really intend to make a career out of stand-up comedy. Initially, he planned on pursuing kickboxing as a career, however, due to frequent headaches, he had to give up on that dream. It was Rogan’s friends from gym and Taekwondo school, who convinced him to give stand-up comedy a try. After practicing incessantly for about 6 months, at the age of 21, Rogan performed his first stand-up routine at an open-mic night at a Stitches comedy club in Boston, in August of 1988.

One time, Rogan performed at a comedy club in Boston and as luck would have it, Jeff Sussman was present, who, after growing fond of Rogan’s 5-minute routine, offered to be his manager. Rogan gladly accepted Sussman’s offer.

Rogan moved to New York City in 1990 and stayed with his grandfather in Newark in his prior years as a full-time comedian. In 1994, he shifted to Los Angeles, where he landed his first national television spot as well as the MTV comedy show “Half-Hour Comedy Hour.” That same year, Rogan landed his first acting role as Frank Valente in Hardball, a nine-episode Fox sitcom. Rogan also began performing at The Comedy Store in Hollywood, performed free for 13 years at the Mitzi Shore.

In the year 1997, Rogan became an interviewer and color commentator for the UFC. In the year 2001, he received an offer from NBC to host the American edition of “Fear Factor,” which he was more than happy to accept. In February of 2003, Rogan went on to become the new co-host of “The Man Show: on Comedy Central” for its fifth season. In 2009, The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast was launched and is one of the most popular podcasts out there.

In 2011, Rogan played his first character in the film “Zookeeper,”  and in 2013, he was the host of the television show “Joe Rogan Questions Everything.
