Nausheen, a 24-year-old from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, cracked and secured All India Rank 9 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination in her Fourth Attempt. She completed her schooling in Gorakhpur only. Then, she graduated with a B.A.(Hons.) History from SGTB Khalsa College, Delhi University in 2019.
Her father, Abdul Qaiyoom, is an Assistant Engineer in a public sector company, and her mother, Zeba Khatoon, is a homemaker. Her elder brother is an employee at a bank and her sister is an employee at LIC. Her optional subject was History and in her second and third attempt, she cleared Prelims but was not able to qualify Mains, but finally with her hard work and determination, she cleared every stage of the examination and passed with flying colors.
Motivation and Strategy
During her graduation, she realized there was a knowledge gap between her and her friends, so wanted to fill that gap and during that she eventually decided to pursue the Civil Services Exam. Both her parents supported her very much. Her mother supported her during her hard times when she couldn’t clear Mains and encourage her and trust her always.
It was her third Prelims, and the most important thing for her was the previous year’s question papers. She also kept on revising basic books continuously. Apart from that, she did PT 365 of Vision IAS. For Mains, she made syllabus-wise notes for each GS and used notes of toppers like Shruti Sharma (AIR 1, 2021).
Apart from that, she also made daily notes from the newspaper and added them to her sectional notes. All these helped her to write different answers from the rest of the students in the examination. This time, she also changed her strategy; instead of solving too many test series of coaching institutes, she solved the previous year’s question papers and matched them with the standard answers to see what more points could be added.
This way, she practiced to complete the paper within time and refine the content of the answers. For the Interview, she formed a peer group and did one-to-one sessions, and her friends also helped to prepare for the interview. Her medium of language for examination was English and her optional was History. She also joined Jamia Millia Islamia’s Residential Coaching Academy (JRCA), which significantly improved her preparation by providing a conducive environment.
For the booklist, she referred to basic books like NCERT and standard textbooks and free online resources and topper’s notes.
