Cook made his first XI appearance in 2003 while playing for Essex’s Academy. Between 2000 and the time he was called up to the Test team in 2006, he participated in several of England’s youth teams. Cook was called up to the England national team in India as a last-minute replacement for Marcus Trescothick and made his debut, at the age of 21, with a century while on tour in the West Indies with the ECB National Academy.

He went on to amass 1,000 runs in his rookie season and record centuries in his first four Test matches against Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and the West Indies. Cook was essential to England’s triumph in the 2009 Ashes series and, following a year in which he filled in as Test captain, and took full responsibility for the ODI captaincy, Cook helped England win the Ashes once again in 2010–11.
