When Australia toured the West Indies in 1954–1955, their all-rounder Keith Miller believed that despite batting in the lower order, Sobers would develop into a stronger batsman than Bowler. For the First Test, which the West Indies lost by nine wickets, Sobers was not chosen. For the Second Test in Port of Spain, Trinidad, and Tobago, he was able to reclaim his position, nevertheless. Sobers scored 47 and eight not out, resulting in a high-scoring draw in the game.

He only bowled three overs for ten runs, rarely utilized as Australia established a first-innings score of more than 600. In the following test, which took place in Georgetown, Guyana (then British Guiana in South America), Sobers was granted one more chance.

In the first quarter of 1956, Sobers, then 19 years old, traveled abroad for the first time as a member of the West Indian tour of New Zealand. For Sobers, who had trouble on the foreign batting wickets, the series did not go well. While the pitches in New Zealand were green, those in the West Indies had little to no grass at all.

Sobers played league cricket in England for numerous years. After returning from West Indies’ maiden tour of England in 1957, he took his coach Frank Worrell’s advice and accepted the position of professional with Radcliffe Cricket Club in the Central Lancashire League, where he remained for five seasons from 1958 to 1962. As a result of this experience, he was able to hone his abilities in a variety of settings, and Sobers claims that participating in the league advanced his cricket education.

His best performance came against champions New South Wales at the Adelaide Oval, where he scored 251 and took 3/51 and 6/72, topping both the batting and bowling averages in South Australia.

For the five-match home series against India in 1970–1971, Sobers served as West Indies captain. India defeated Australia 1-0, and four games were drawn. A year later, Sobers captained West Indies against New Zealand in five home Test matches, all of which ended in draws.

For the 1972–73 home series against Australia, Rohan Kanhai took Sobers’ place as West Indies captain. Sobers did not participate in the series, but in 1973, he went back to England to play for Kanhai. At Queen’s Park Oval against England in March 1974, he played his final Test match.
