Introduction

Srishti Dabas, a 25-year-old, secured All India Rank 6 in UPSC 2023 in her very first attempt with her self-confidence and determination to clear this examination. She was born and brought up in Delhi. She graduated with a degree in political science from Indraprastha College for Women, Delhi University.

Then, she completed her post-graduation in political science at IGNOU. Post that she worked briefly with the Ministry of Social Justice And Empowerment and then she was posted to Mumbai, working with the Reserve Bank of India. Her father is an Assistant Sub Inspector in Delhi Police and her mother is a homemaker.

Challenges And Motivation

Srishti Dabas faced some personal and professional challenges. She was not even accepted when she was born as a girl child. Over the course, her mother also faced a lot of struggle, and currently, her parents are separated. She stayed with her mother. Her mother was her sole support, and she instilled optimism and positivity in her and taught her how to face problems and grow.

Seeing her mother struggling impacted Srishti very positively. It also helped her to understand the issues in society, and instead of looking at them negatively, she preferred how she could change them. Therefore, she wanted to reach a position where she could make a difference in society and the country. 

Preparation/ Strategy

Srishti started her full-fledged preparation after she joined RBI. She is an early morning person, so woke up early and having fresh mind in the morning, she read for 3-4 hours before going to office and used that time very productively. Then, in office also, she somehow managed some time to study, also there is library in her office, so she utilised that also very effectively.

Apart from that, Saturday and Sunday were her off days, so she took advantage of this and utilized that time very properly. Leaves were also available, so she utilized that very productively and planned a lot about it as to how many leaves to take before Prelims, how many leaves before Mains, and how many before the Interview. Also, her office was very supportive and pushed her toward her dreams.

During her preparation she never looked for how many hours she was studying as she believes quantity of hours doesn’t matter, quality matters. And she also believes that students can study more productively in less time. She gives more importance to revision regularly and solving more and more previous year’s question papers. Apart from that, she gave importance to note-making, as it helps to retain better.

She broke down her preparation and took one step at a time. She did targeted preparation for Prelims, then Mains, and then for Interview. She completed her Optional subject first, which was Political Science and International Relations. She also read a lot of newspapers after her Main result to prepare for the Interview. She also had it in her mind that her first attempt should be her last attempt.

  • Have self-confidence and belive in yourself because external motivation will be useful only upto a certain point.
