Young Dolph Early life
In Chicago, Illinois, Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., widely known as Young Dolph, was born on July 27, 1985. However, he was raised in Memphis, Tennessee as his family migrated there when he was about 2 years old. Not an only child, he has 4 siblings – two sisters and two brothers.
Thornton’s parents were drug addicts and so they were rarely around. Hence, he was primarily raised by his grandmother. In one of his tracks ‘Preach’, he goes on to rap, “Mama always in the streets, so guess who raised me?”
In the beginning, he described his grandmother to be “the meanest motherfucker in the world.” He further went on to explain – “I didn’t get that shit at the time. … All the shit she was telling you, you get to seeing that shit when you hit about 15“, and said that when he reached that age, he began making use of all that she had taught him throughout his life.
Thornton went to Hamilton High School where he was an average student. He had an interest in music, especially rap, and so after his graduation, did not bother to enroll himself in a college. Instead, he began his quest to become a rap star.
In 2008, his grandmother passed away, which affected him deeply, and he turned to music to showcase his feelings and thoughts.

Two weeks after that, Young Dolph released the music video for “Play Wit Yo’ Bitch” resulting in his vehicle being the target of gunfire in Charlotte, North Carolina, while he was in town for a performance. His car was shot over 100 times but since it was had bulletproof panels, no one ended up hurt. After the shooting, two men along with Blac Youngsta were arrested. However, on accounts of insufficient evidence, the charges had to be dropped.
