Young Dolph Early life

In Chicago, Illinois, Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., widely known as Young Dolph, was born on July 27, 1985. However, he was raised in Memphis, Tennessee as his family migrated there when he was about 2 years old. Not an only child, he has 4 siblings – two sisters and two brothers.

Thornton’s parents were drug addicts and so they were rarely around. Hence, he was primarily raised by his grandmother. In one of his tracks ‘Preach’, he goes on to rap, “Mama always in the streets, so guess who raised me?”

In the beginning, he described his grandmother to be “the meanest motherfucker in the world.” He further went on to explain – “I didn’t get that shit at the time. … All the shit she was telling you, you get to seeing that shit when you hit about 15“, and said that when he reached that age, he began making use of all that she had taught him throughout his life.

Thornton went to Hamilton High School where he was an average student. He had an interest in music, especially rap, and so after his graduation, did not bother to enroll himself in a college. Instead, he began his quest to become a rap star.

In 2008, his grandmother passed away, which affected him deeply, and he turned to music to showcase his feelings and thoughts.

Young Dolph Personal life

Thornton has two children, Tre Tre and Aria, with Mia Jaye. The first child was born in the year 2014 and the second, in 2017.

Young Dolph Career

2008–2017:

Young Dolph released his first mixtape in 2008, called Paper Route Campaign, and two years after that, in the year 2010, established his label Paper Route Empire. He also released Welcome 2 Dolph World in the very same year. Young Dolph’s popularity began to gain momentum, which led to the Memphis rapper Yo Gotti offering him a record deal with Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group label, which is affiliated with Epic Records, in August of 2014. However, Young Dolph wished to remain independent and hence, turned down the offer.

In the year 2016, Young Dolph got featured on O.T. Genasis’s “Cut It,” which was a huge hit and was classified double platinum. Later in the year, he released his debut album King of Memphis, under his independent label. The album went on to peak at number 49 on the Billboard 200. However, multiple other rappers from Memphis took offense at the album’s title and released a diss track, “SHAKE SUM (Young Dolph Diss)” in response.

In 2017, Young Dolph released a diss track against Yo Gotti titled “Play Wit Yo’ Bitch“, which pushed Yo Gotti to release a song in response. Two weeks after that, Young Dolph released the music video for “Play Wit Yo’ Bitch” resulting in his vehicle being the target of gunfire in Charlotte, North Carolina, while he was in town for a performance. His car was shot over 100 times but since it was had bulletproof panels, no one ended up hurt. After the shooting, two men along with Blac Youngsta were arrested. However, on accounts of insufficient evidence, the charges had to be dropped. Clever as he was, Young Dolph used the publicity that he gained from the shooting to promote Bulletproof, his second studio album. It comprised singles like ‘100 Shots’, ‘But I’m Bulletproof’ and ‘I Pray for My Enemies’. Later in the same year, he released two more albums: ‘Tracking Numbers’ and ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

In July of 2019, Young Dolph collaborated with Key Glock for the second time, releasing his first-ever collaborative album, Dum and Dummer, peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart.
