In the year of 1995, Burns auditioned for Blue’s Clues, thinking it was just another voice-over role. The Nickelodeon executives were hesitant about Burns hosting their new show since they were not in favor of the way he dressed, and hence, the show’s creators requested Burns to dress in a more apt and conservative way. Burns mentioned that the creators asked him, “Could you not look like yourself tomorrow morning?” Despite this minor hassle, he went on to become a favorite with preschool test audiences. It was because of Burns’ impeccable performances that Blue’s Clues became a huge success. Alice Wilder, Nickelodeon’s Director of Research and Development, commented: “There was just something about this kid, who was fresh out of Pennsylvania, who just knew where to look in the camera to really talk to kids. He was just right.” In the year 2000, Burns was included in People’s annual list of America’s most eligible bachelors.
