ABP History

STAR News debuted on February 18th, 1998. Starting in 2003, STAR News was a full-fledged channel. It was the first bilingual (English – Hindi) news service, and up until 2003, it was independently run by STAR India with production handled by NDTV. As a result of the partnership between STAR and ABP, STAR News was changed into a full-fledged Hindi language news channel when the contract with NDTV expired in 2003.

When the agreement with NDTV expired in 2003, STAR made the decision to operate the channel independently. However, the government issued a directive capping foreign ownership in the news industry at 26%. The Ananda Bazar Patrika group and STAR then formed a joint venture to create Media Content and Communications Services Pvt. Ltd. (MCCS), which ran the channel STAR News. In this joint venture, the Ananda Bazar Patrika group held a 74 percent stake, with STAR holding a 26 percent stake.

Anandabazar Patrika (ABP) Group announced their separation on April 16, 2012, allowing the Rupert Murdoch-controlled corporation to withdraw from the Indian news market and concentrate on entertainment. The eight-year relationship with the “Star” brand came to an end with the divorce.

The news stations’ owner and operator, Media Content and Communications (MCCS), announced that following the division, the Marathi news channel Star Majha would become ABP Majha, the Bengali news channel Star Ananda would become ABP Ananda, and the Hindi news channel Star News would become ABP News. Audiences in the northern Punjabi region are fond of the channel’s ABP Sanjha in Punjabi. On January 1st, 2016, ABP Asmita, a version in Gujarati, was released.

Avinash Pandey took over as CEO of ABP News Network in November 2016.
